Liam always brought his teddy bear with him wherever he went. The small brown bear was soft from years of hugs and worn thin at the arm where a tiny patch showed. It was not just a toy to Liam. His father had given it to him during their last visit before the separation. Now that Liam rarely saw him, the teddy bear became a constant reminder of his dad. Whenever Liam felt lonely or missed his dad, he held the bear tightly and felt a little better.
One morning, Liam and his mom were packing their bags for a trip. His mom folded his clothes neatly into the suitcase while Liam sat on the bed holding his teddy bear. His mom told him to pack his things quickly because they had to leave soon. Liam placed the teddy bear inside the suitcase, then helped zip his bag up. In the rush of getting ready, neither of them paid much attention to where things went.
Later that day, they arrived at the train station. People were moving everywhere, carrying bags and talking loudly as trains came and went. Liam reached into his backpack, expecting to feel the familiar soft fur of his teddy bear. Instead, his hand touched nothing but notebooks and snacks.
His heart dropped.
“Mom,” Liam said nervously, “I can’t find my teddy bear.” He had a pleading look on his face, as if he wanted to search for it.
His mom stopped and looked at him with concern. “Are you sure it’s not in your bag?”
Liam checked again, digging through every pocket. The bear was nowhere to be found. Panic started to grow inside him. The teddy bear was not just any toy. It was the one thing that reminded him of his dad.
“It must have fallen out when the suitcase opened earlier,” Liam said somberly.
For the rest of the trip, they searched everywhere. They looked in the car, around the train station benches, and even asked a worker if anyone had seen a lost teddy bear. When they arrived at the hotel, Liam checked under the bed, behind the chairs, and inside every corner of the room. The more they searched, the more Liam felt like he might never see the teddy bear again.
His mom gently placed a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll keep looking,” she said kindly, trying to comfort him.
Later that night, while unpacking their suitcase, Liam’s mom suddenly paused.
“Liam, come here for a second,” she called.
Liam walked over and looked inside the suitcase. Right there, tucked between two sweaters, was the brown teddy bear.
Liam’s eyes lit up with relief. He quickly grabbed the bear and hugged it tightly against his chest.
“It was here the whole time,” his mom said with a small laugh.
Liam smiled, feeling a wave of happiness wash over him. The teddy bear had never really been lost after all. As he held it close that night, he felt safe again, knowing that even when something seems lost, the love connected to it can still be right there with you.
