How to Play Uno

Uno is a fun card game where 2-8 players need to use all their cards. It’s famous all around the world, for it’s not expensive and suitable for all ages. Today, you’ll be learning how to play Uno.

Types of Cards

Uno cards come in different colours: red, green, yellow, and blue, each having any of the following functions:

  • Action cards (tells you what to do)
  • +4 cards (give the next person +4 cards)
  • +2 cards (give the next person +2 cards)
  • Blocks (block the next person’s turn)
  • Color changers (change the colour)
  • Uno reverses (revert the order of turns)

Cards like the +4 and the colour changer are black.

Number cards (0-9) are also another kind of card, but they are not action cards. They are just used for matching colours and numbers.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Shuffle the cards
  2. Give your friends 7-9 cards
  3. Place down one card in the middle of the table; that’s your starting card.
  4. Place the rest of the cards in a neat pile and put them where everyone can reach. This is called a deck.
  5. Only place a card if it’s the same colour, same number, same symbol or if it’s black (you can play any coloured card if the card is black and if it’s not a colour changer).
  6. Try to make sure you say “Uno” when you have only one card; if you don’t, someone else will say it and you have to get two cards.
  7. Don’t show your cards, because if you do, your friends will see your cards and get an advantage.
  8. If there are no cards you can play, grab one card from the deck, if it’s a card you can play, you can either play it or keep it for later. If it’s not a card you can play, keep it.

Since you know how to play Uno, start playing and beat your friends.

Top tip:

When your friends play a +4 or +2 card, play another +2 or +4 if you have one, the next person will have to get the amount of cards you and the previous person played (example: the person plays a +4, you play a +2, the next person will have to get six cards, if they don’t have a +2 or +4).
