The Diary of Sir Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton

Throughout June, 1661

Dear diary,

My uncle, who is a Cambridge graduate, convinced my mother to make me stop working at our family farm and instead send an application to his alma mater. Several weeks after the application was sent, I got accepted. In the years I’ll be spending in Cambridge at Trinity College, I plan to try my hardest to pursue math and science to make my mom not regret applying for me to this college.

1665

Dear diary,

Four years later, I received my BA and MA degrees. But several months later, Cambridge Trinity College closed down because of the plague, and all the students and teachers were forced to go back to their homes until it ended. While I was at home, I have been really interested in science and even did some research and made discoveries and accomplishments, like developing the three laws of motion, inventing calculus and researching the theory of optics. Now, I’m eager to discover more interesting things throughout my journey to be an unforgettable scientist.

Late summer of 1666

Dear diary,

After some dinner at Trinity Cambridge College, I was sitting under an apple tree. But while mulling over my thoughts, I saw an apple fall on the ground. I was confused at first, as I pondered the forces that could have caused it to fall straight down, instead of upwards or sideways. After a quick moment of thinking, my observation sparked thinking about the universal law of gravitation. I realized that some force must be acting on falling objects like apples; otherwise, the rest wouldn’t start moving. I immediately shared my huge discovery with William Stukely, my niece (Cathrine Barton) and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire).

5 July 1687

Dear diary,

Twenty-two years after I discovered gravity, I decided to publish a book about it. I was admired, widely recognized, and noticed by many different scientists. Everyone understood the complex mathematics of gravity, which made a huge impact on theoretical and practical astronomy. It even changed the way people understood the universe. I was shocked at how it changed the world and my life. I am so amazed at myself and I think my past self would be even prouder.
