Jørn Utzon is known for many great achievements. In this biography I’ll be talking about some. His most famous work though, is undoubtedly the Sydney Opera House.
Jørn Utzon’s wonderful life began on the 9th of April,1918,on a crisp spring day. As a young boy, Utzon helped his father, naval architect, in a shipyard he directed. Soon, Utzon became interested in naval architecture, and a possible career in the subject.
Due to his family’s interest in art, Utzon studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for five years, starting in 1937,when he was 19, with his graduation taking place in in 1942.After his graduation, he traveled to Helsinki, Morocco, the United States, Mexico, China, Japan, India, then Australia, starting his travels in 1946 and ending them 20 years later.
After leaving Australia in 1966,Utzon visited Mallorca, a Spanish island. Fascinated by the island, he decided to build a holiday home for his family and himself on a cliff near Portopetro,a district of Santanyní. The house was given the name Can Lis, after his wife.
Soon Utzon and his family became disturbed by all the tourists and the constant sound of waves crashing against the cliff face, so they decided to build a new holiday home in a more isolated place, away from the shore and where tourists couldn’t see. Once completed, the house was named Can Feliz.Utzon probably decided to name the house Can Feliz because feliz in Spanish means happy or fortunate.
Utzon’s first design was a water tower in Svaneke, with his design entry for the Sydney Opera House following two years later. Before the Sydney Opera House, Utzon designed his own house in Helebæk, the Kingo Houses, and Elineburg Housing. After designing the Sydney Opera House, he designed Paustian Furniture Store, Hammershøj Care Centre, Bagsværd Church, and many more.
Jørn Utzon won five awards in his lifetime. In 1992,he won the Wolf Prize in Arts – Architecture, and in 2003 he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. He also won the Royal Gold Medal 1978,the Alvar Aalto Medal 1982, and the Australian Institution of Architecture award 1973.On 2008,November 29th,Jørn Utzon died at 90 years old.
Utzon had a busy personal life, he was married to Anne Lis Fenger Utzon, and together they had three children. They had a daughter named Lin who later married Australian architect Alex Popov. They also had two sons named Jan and Kim; both of them were architects trained by Utzon.
Jørn Utzon’s life was certainly eventful, with its own downsides and upsides. The challenges and achievements were all memories at the end of his life. From winning the Pritzker Prize(the most prestigious award in his profession,) to his kids being born, his life was full of adventures and difficulties that made the person we know today, Jørn Utzon.
