If you like books about adventure and friendship, Holes by Louis Sachar would be a perfect one to read! Louis Sachar is an American author best known for writing the novel Holes and Wayside School series. He was born in New York, U.S on March 20, 1954. He started writing children’s books after college. Sachar began writing books as a career in 1989. An interesting fact about him is that he never shares any information about a current book he’s writing, not even to his editor and his family!
Holes is about a teenage boy, wrongly accused of theft, was sent to a prison camp where he and other campers dig holes everyday. Stanley discovers his connections about his cursed family luck, the camp’s disturbing secrets and an ancient hidden treasure which could break his misfortune.
Stanley Yelnats is the main protagonist in the story. He’s a courageous teenager who has a friend called Zero. I like him because although he has bad luck, he tries to be happy in the worst situations. Zero was Stanley’s only best friend in camp. He is smart, but also a shy boy. I like him because he is very loyal to Stanley.
The parts I mostly enjoyed in the book was parts about friendship, love and people getting justice in the book. I also enjoyed the happy (and the not-so happy) endings everyone had. Maybe the reader would enjoy reading the fun and happy parts instead of the gloomy and bad parts as much as I do. Speaking of bad parts, I mostly didn’t like the racism and cruel parts in the story. I hate being a racist because it hurts many people. I also dislike the antagonists being cruel to the protagonists. Bullying was also mentioned in the book and I dislike bullying very much.
I would recommend this book to most kids who adore books about justice, mystery, family, love and friendship. However, I also think that suggesting this book to older readers is appropriate because there are some chapters about dealing with cruelty, bullying and racism.
So if you think this book would be great to read, then go ahead and read it!
