Biography Writing: J.R.R Tolkien – One Writer to Rule Them All

There was once a boy called John Ronald Ruel Tolkien, born in South Africa on January 3, 1892. At a young age, he was very good at languages and loved to read books. Because his father died of rheumatic fever, his mother did not have enough money to send him to school. So she taught him at home. Sadly, his mother died when he was only 12 years old.

He soon wrote his own languages in his teens and learned new ones. Then one time, on a summer holiday in Switzerland, he went hiking and got inspired by one of the landmarks in his story, “The Misty Mountains.”

At the age of sixteen, he met Edith Mary Brat. Then a few months later, they became a school couple. But his guardian, Father Morgan, told him that being with Edith affected his school work badly. So he told Tolkien not to talk nor write letters to each other until he was 21.

Afterwards, he joined the British army in World War One and became a secondary lieutenant. Edith complained about him going to war. They got married, but Tolkien was called to fight in France. There, he led an army, but before he did, he got bored waiting for orders. So Tolkien wrote poems to pass the time. He also fought in the battle of Somme and Home Front.

When the war was over, he wrote his first book, “The Hobbit,” and translated the book, “Beowulf.” Then he joined the army again in World War Two, where he worked as a code breaker.

After the Second World War, Edith and Tolkien had four kids: Christopher, Priscilla, Michael, and John. This was also the time he finished “The Lord of The Rings” trilogy. Soon when he published his books, he became famous. His friend C.S Lewis even nominated him for the Nobel Prize for Literature, and everything seemed fine.

Edith died at the age of 82. Then J.R.R Tolkien died 21 months later, on September 2, 1973, with the name Beren added to his name. He may have died, but his books continue to live on and become one of the best.
